Comprehensive Immigration Reform Still Possible in 2014

still possibleThe chat among political immigration pundits suggests that the passage of comprehensive immigration reform bill is still possible this year. According to the Obama administration, it will be a political suicide for the Republican Party to continue to stall on the issue of immigration.

According to the Washington Post, “President Obama told House Democrats Friday that comprehensive immigration reform remains a top priority for this year in spite of Republican lawmakers who are “scared” of the political consequences.”

The President opined that the Republicans are “worried and they’re scared about the political blowback,” Mr. Obama said of the GOP. “We can all appreciate the maneuverings that take place, particularly in an election year.”

Speaker John A. Boehner has said that the House probably won’t approve comprehensive immigration reform this year because Republicans don’t trust Mr. Obama to improve border security.

At the Democrats’ annual retreat in Cambridge, Md., Mr. Obama said he doesn’t want to wait until later in his presidency to get the legislation approved.

“Punting and putting things off for another year, another two years, another three years, it hurts people,” Mr. Obama said. “It hurts our economy, it hurts families. We have to remind ourselves that there are people behind the statistics.”

If we can take the president at his words, it appears that he is determined to force an immigration bill through the Congress this year as he did the Affordable Healthcare Act.

All immigrants in dire immigration situation should remain hopeful as we wait for what the President will do this year after many years of promises upon promises.
