Attorney Famuyide Engineered Change in Law
It was the case of an immigrant who contacted HIV while working with the population in New York. Three lawyers tried to obtain green card for this immigrant unsuccessfully. Attorney Famuyide was retained 5years after the case started. Attorney Famuyide battled with the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services for 5years before finally obtaining green card for the immigrant. It was a big scene at the USCIS office in New York the day the adjustment of status of this client was finalized and her passport stamped. She cried profusely and attracted a big crowd of sympathizers. The case had lasted for 10years. The immigrant suffered for 10 long years. Other members of her family had already U.S. citizens before she could dream of obtain her permanent resident status. Her parent died abroad during this ordeal and she could not travel to pay her last respect. She suffered untold hardship in the hands of bureaucrats and the outdated immigration system. After the case was completed in 2007, Attorney Famuyide decided to be an immigration champion for HIV victims in the United States. He wrote and published series of articles on the subject and decided to seek Congressional help to effect a change in the law. Under the old U.S. Immigration law, HIV victims were classified in the same category as criminals. They were deemed inadmissible as criminals unless waiver was granted. To obtain waiver was like a donkey passing through they eye of a needle. Attorney Famuyide decided to write to the New York Congressional delegation to the U.S. Senate. He sought interview with the then Senator Hillary Clinton on this subject during her run for presidency. We are happy to report that effective January 4, 2010, HIV has been removed from the list of grounds of inadmissibility. Anyone with HIV in the U.S now can obtain green card without the ordeal of applying for waiver. We are happy to know that no other person will go through the 10year torment of Attorney Famuyide’s client. Many thanks to numerous and unknown advocates who might have joined in making this change of law a reality. At the U.S. Immigration News, we will continue to fight for the good of all immigrants in the U.S. Justice must be for all not for the few. Join us in this crusade by advertising your business in the U.S. Immigration News so we can continue the fight for immigrants.
